With advances in technology, it became easier for burglars to access homes and workplaces that were not adequately protected. Simple locks became obsolete and were replaced by locks accompanied by security systems that opened with passwords, fingerprints and in some cases even voice activation.
With this advancement in technology, the key card lock was invented. As the name suggests it is a card that is designed to be swiped, in order to gain access or to exit from a particular location. As far as its design goes, it resembles a credit card and is fashioned out of plastic. The card has a digital signature that can be used to either lock or open doors.
Key cards are offered in a variety of types. Some key cards are designed with a magnetic strip while others have a bar code; cards that are called proximity cards and smart cards are also available today. Key cards are not often used in residences rather in professional environments as well as hotel as they cannot be easily duplicated like a simple key. The reason key cards are used at work places is because they become a source of identification of the employees and can be used to keep tabs on people entering and exiting the workplace.
Key cards cannot be used on a simple door. Doors that have been fitted with a special computer system and designed to recognize key cards are the only kind of the doors that can be accessed using key cards.
